Leading in the Classroom, Community, and Capitol

Representative Matt Koleszar was elected to the Michigan State House in 2018 on a promise to fight for students, teachers, and working families.

He became a public servant because the Republican-controlled state government more closely reflected the financial agendas of large corporations and Trump mega donors than the values of every-day hardworking Michiganders.

Matt knows these values by heart because that’s who he is. He’s a lifelong Michigander raised in Walled

Lake. He’s the son of a single mother who balanced raising him with a full-time job as an Operating Room Nurse. He and his wife, Kim, live in Plymouth Township with their rescued English Bulldog, Roosevelt, and two cats.

From an early age, Matt’s teachers made a strong impression on him. He felt a pull into pursuing education after attending Walled Lake Western High School and went on to receive a Master’s at EMU.
At that point in Michigan’s history, there were more new teachers graduating than there were open positions, so Matt found a directory of all public school districts and started applying for jobs beginning in the A’s. The strategy worked – he was soon employed by the Airport Community School District in Monroe County.

While teaching at Airport, Matt also served as the President of the Airport Education Association, Middle School Cross Country and Baseball Coach, and Quiz Bowl Coach.

From his 12 years in public education and as a Union Leader, he watched the State Legislature pass bill after bill after bill that deliberately weakened public schools and protections for “the little guy” – ranging from factory workers to small business owners.

As State Representative, he now works to extend public education and public health access to every one of his constituents regardless of their skin tone, wealth, sexual orientation, or ideology.

That’s why he served on the Education and Health Policy committees in his term as Representative. It’s why he introduced legislation to advance literacy across Michigan (which currently ranks near the bottom of the country in reading), fund our schools (we rank dead last in funding growth) and fought to protect Medicaid and hold prescription drug companies accountable for price gouging.

It’s also why he also founded the Downtown Business Coalition (DBC) earlier this year to ensure ongoing dialogue between small businesses and his office as they fight to survive the pandemic.
